The Incomprehensible Enchantment: Finding Stillness of Heart in the Noise of the Absolute
Discover the radical non-duality of stillness of heart. There is no path to reach; only the aware presence that is already here, encompassing all noise and sile
We live in a culture obsessed with the "active mode," a relentless manipulation of reality where everything must be a problem to be solved or a goal to be achieved. We are told that if we work hard enough, meditate long enough, or silence our minds effectively enough, we will eventually reach a state of enlightenment. But who is this "you" that is going to get there? And where exactly is "there" if the absolute is already everything that is? The search for a spiritual result is just another form of "killing time." It is a violent expression of our refusal to be with what is. We fill our days with activities, even spiritual ones, because we are terrified of what might happen if we actually stop gesticulating and stop speaking in every tongue. We fear that in the silence, we will encounter anxiety, boredom, or a crushing sense of isolation. Yet, these feelings are merely waves on the surface of something much deeper. They are not obstacles to be removed; they are the movement of life itself. When we speak of a stillness of heart, we are not talking about a state of total inactivity or a psychic vacuum. It is more like the rhythm of breathing—the natural alternation between inhalation and exhalation. If you only inhale, you suffocate. If you only exhale, you collapse. Today’s world demands a constant exhalation of doing, of producing, of "active mode" adrenaline. We have forgotten the "passive mode," which is not a lack of life but the capacity to let the world enter. It is like sitting in a park and simply hearing the birds. To the world, you are a loafer, producing nothing. In reality, you are allowing the totality to manifest without your interference. There is a common misunderstanding that meditation is a ladder to a higher floor. It is not. Meditation may bring a sense of comfort or a "small seed of peace" in the moment, and that is perfectly fine. But it is not a path to a future awakening. If meditation is an "innocent" act, it cannot be a practice. Innocence means doing something for the first time, every time, with the freshness of a beginner’s mind. If you are practicing to achieve a result, you are no longer innocent; you are an investor looking for a profit. And the absolute does not pay dividends. Think of the mountain and the valley. You can be overwhelmed by the noise of the street as if you were trapped in a room with speakers at maximum volume. Or, you can hear those same noises occurring in the valley while you remain held by the vast silence of the mountains. The noises haven't changed, but the spaciousness in which they occur has been recognized. This is the stillness of heart. It is a sense of density, a conscious presence that is more fundamental than the air we breathe. In this presence, problems don't necessarily disappear, but they have room to breathe. When the heart is small and compressed, a single difficulty occupies the entire space. When the heart is vast, the difficulty is just one more guest in an infinite house.
