We often treat life as a series of problems to be solved, a constant movement toward a better version of ourselves or a more peaceful state of being. We are told that if we work hard enough, meditate long enough, or follow the right path, we will eventually reach a place of lasting quiet. But who is it that wants to reach that place? And where would this "there" be, if not right here? The truth is that there is no this moment because what we are looking for is the very ground upon which we stand. The power of silence isn't a reward for spiritual effort; it is the natural state of the absolute manifesting as this moment, exactly as it is. In our current culture, we have become obsessed with the active mode. We are constantly manipulating reality, trying to change things, and engaging in endless problem-solving. This active mode is fueled by adrenaline and a desperate need to produce, to achieve, and to become. We have completely underestimated the passive mode—not as a sign of laziness, but as a profound opening where we stop acting on the world and simply let the world enter. This isn't something we do to get a result. It is more like the rhythm of breathing. You cannot only inhale; you must also exhale. Silence is the exhalation of the body-mind. It is the moment we stop covering reality with a veil of words and concepts. Many people think of silence as the absence of sound, but silence is much stranger than that. We cannot actually hear silence with our ears; we only perceive it in contrast to noise. We have the impression that when noise starts, silence goes away, but this is an illusion. Think of a screen and a film. When the movie is playing, the screen doesn't disappear. It is the very thing that allows the film to be seen. You can make a deafening noise for a hundred years, and the moment you stop, silence is right there, exactly as it was before you began. The power of silence lies in the fact that it is the background that never leaves. We are the ones who come and go, appearing as a flicker of activity in this vastness. The separate self is essentially a chatterbox. It is a continuous activity of thinking, doing, and naming. It feels the need to fill every gap with noise because of a deep fear of the void—an *horror vacui*. The separate self believes that if it stops moving, it will cease to exist. And in a sense, that is true. When the activity stops, the seeker vanishes, and only the absolute remains. This is why when we find a gap in the net of our thoughts, we might feel a sense of terror, like falling into an abyss with no bottom. That terror is simply the separate self clutching at the air, trying to find its footing in a space where there is no "me" and "not-me." But if we don't avoid that discomfort, if we stop trying to "kill time" with distractions, we might find that the abyss is actually a profound ease, like a mother holding a child.
