Beyond Seeking: Why Meditation for Depression is Not a Path to What You Already Are

We often find ourselves searching for the donkey while we are already sitting on its back. This is the curious condition of the separate self, always looking for a way out, a way up, or a way through. When the weight of existence becomes heavy, the mind frequently turns to meditation for depression as a tool for repair, a ladder to climb out of the pit of human suffering. But who is it that is trying to climb? And where do we think we are going? If we look closely at this moment, we find that there is nowhere to go because what we are is already here. The separate self is not an entity with its own substance; it is a functional unit, a body-mind that interacts with the environment. It is a relational mode that can be functional or dysfunctional, caring or neglectful. Yet, even in its most broken states, it is still a perfect expression of the absolute. The idea that we must achieve a certain state of mind to be "enlightened" is one of the greatest distractions from being. We speak of liberation, but liberation is never *of* the separate self; it is liberation *from* the separate self. It is the realization that the one who believes they are suffering, the one seeking a cure through meditation for depression, is themselves a movement within the totality. There is no separate "you" who chooses to meditate or not to meditate. If meditation happens in a life, it is a natural process, much like a wound healing. It is not the merit of an "I" who decided to be spiritual. In the dance of the totality, the one who meditates and the one who does not are both perfect expressions of what is. We often get caught in the horizontal dimension of time, believing that if we practice enough, we will reach a vertical breakthrough. We think of the present as a thin slice of time we must "stay" in. But the absolute is not a point in time; it is the timeless condition that allows time to appear. It is like the silence that underlies noise. The noise doesn't replace the silence; they exist simultaneously. When we use meditation for depression to seek comfort, we are working on the horizontal level of self-improvement. There is nothing wrong with this. In the relative world, we are constantly challenged to learn, to grow, and to take care of the body-mind until the very last breath. Meditation can indeed bring benefits to the physiology. It can relax chronic tensions that we don't even notice, allowing the blood to flow more freely and the immune system to strengthen. It can create a small space between a situation and our automatic reactions, allowing for a more harmonious way of living. However, we must be frank: none of these improvements bring us a single centimeter closer to the absolute. A wave does not become more like the ocean by becoming a calmer wave. It is already the ocean, whether it is crashing in a storm of despair or lying flat in the sun.
