Beyond the Sound: Why Meditation Healing Music is Already the Silence You Are

Stop seeking and start seeing. Silence isn't a goal; it's the backdrop of every sound. Discover why there is no separate self to achieve enlightenment.

We spend so much time looking for something that has never been lost. It is a strange comedy, really—like a man frantically searching for his glasses while they are perched firmly on his nose. We listen to meditation healing music, we sit in silence, we join groups, and we read books, all in the hopes of reaching some distant shore called awakening. But who is it that wants to reach that shore? And where is this "there" that is supposed to be better than "here"? When we talk about the separate self, we are talking about a functional unit, a psychological bundle of habits that helps the body-mind navigate the world. It is a relational mode, a way of putting together the body and the mind to interact with the environment. Sometimes this function is smooth, sometimes it is dysfunctional or even harmful, but it is all the absolute. Whether there is kindness or exploitation, whether there is health or sickness, it is all the dancing energy of the totality. The separate self isn't a thing that needs to be destroyed or improved; it is simply a movement within what already is. Many of us are drawn to practices because we feel a sense of lack. We think that if we listen to the right frequency or find the perfect meditation healing music, we will finally bridge the gap between our current state and the absolute. But the absolute has no gaps. There is no separation. Silence is not a destination you reach after the noise stops; silence is the very ground that allows the noise to be heard. It is like the screen and the film. The characters in the movie may be crying, fighting, or celebrating, but the screen remains unaffected, silent, and ever-present. You are the screen, not the character. Does meditation help? Of course, it can. On a horizontal level, sitting in quiet can relax the body-mind. It can lower stress, boost the immune system, and make the "me" feel a bit more comfortable in its skin. When we relax, the blood vessels dilate, oxygen flows, and chronic tensions we didn't even know we had begin to soften. This is wonderful for the body-mind, just as eating good food or getting enough sleep is wonderful. But let’s be clear: feeling better is not enlightenment. There is no "process" of awakening. You don't become more enlightened by having a more relaxed nervous system, though it certainly makes the dream of life more pleasant. We often hear about "transcending the present," but what does that really mean? It’s not about going somewhere else. It’s about noticing that the "I am" we cling to is often just another appearance. We say, "I am certain that I exist," but even that "I am" is standing on the side of the body-mind. It is a relative statement. Before the "I am," there is a timeless condition that allows even the sense of existence to appear. It is like the silence that underlies the roar of the ocean. The waves are the ocean, and the ocean is the waves. There is no hierarchy here.
