We often find ourselves in a peculiar state of distraction, looking for the very thing we are already sitting on. It is like the old story of the man frantically searching for his donkey while he is currently riding it. We look for peace, we look for health, we look for an escape from the noise of the mind, and yet, who is it that is looking? This separate self, this unit we call the body-mind, feels small and threatened. It encounters the friction of life and immediately begins to seek a way out. It looks for a practice, perhaps a specific form of health anxiety meditation, hoping that by doing something, it can become something else. But there is no "becoming" in the absolute. When we talk about the body-mind, we are talking about a functional unit, a relational mode that moves through the world. Sometimes this unit functions smoothly, and sometimes it malfunctions. It contracts, it worries, it feels the weight of past traumas or the shadow of future fears. We might notice that stress erodes the immune system or that chronic tensions hold the body in a grip of steel. In those moments, the body-mind might find relief in sitting quietly. Meditation may bring comfort now; it might even help the energy circulate better or allow the nervous system to relax. But let’s be very clear: this is not a ladder to enlightenment. There is no ladder because there is nowhere to go. Enlightenment is not a destination; it is the realization that the seeker was never there to begin with. The liberation we speak of is never *of* the separate self, but *from* the separate self. It is the falling away of the illusion that there is an "I" who owns the anxiety or an "I" who can "fix" it through a spiritual technique. If meditation happens in your life, it is simply a natural expression of the absolute, just as the heartbeat is, or just as a storm is. It isn't a choice made by a free agent. Think about it: do we really control our thoughts? If we had control, would we ever choose a single thought of self-doubt, depression, or fear? We are "thought" more than we think. Thoughts flow like cars in traffic, and the separate self is just another car passing by, yet we have this habit of jumping into the driver's seat of every vehicle that passes, claiming it as our own. When health anxiety meditation appears as a response to the body's contraction, it is part of the horizontal movement of life. On this horizontal plane, we take care of the body, we seek better health, and we learn to manage the "orchestra playing on the Titanic." It is fine to want to feel better. It is fine to relax the muscles. But the absolute freedom we are is vertical. It is not found in the improvement of the dream character. It is the screen upon which the movie is projected. Whether the movie is a tragedy of illness or a comedy of perfect health, the screen remains untouched, unstained, and ever-present.
