We spend so much of our lives looking for something that isn't lost. We treat our spiritual search like a frantic man running around a field screaming that he has lost his donkey, unaware that he is currently sitting on its back. This is the great irony of the seeker. We are already riding the very thing we are looking for. We think we need to find a way to **heal meditation** or use it as a bridge to reach a distant shore called enlightenment, but who is it that thinks they are separate from the ocean? There is a common misunderstanding that meditation is a ladder we climb to reach a higher state of being. We think that if we sit long enough, or breathe deeply enough, we will eventually "become" enlightened. But that is a trick of the separate self. The separate self loves the idea of a journey because a journey implies a future where it can finally achieve something. But the absolute is not in the future. It is not a destination. It is the very ground upon which the idea of a "destination" arises. When we talk about the body-mind, we are talking about a single unit of experience. This unit might feel stress, it might feel tension, or it might feel a deep sense of unease. In this context, to **heal meditation** means to stop using it as a tool for spiritual achievement and instead see it for what it can actually do on a horizontal level. Meditation can certainly bring comfort. It can relax the muscles, improve the immune system, and clear the clutter of useless thoughts that serve only to discharge anxiety. It can make the body-mind function more harmoniously. But let us be frank: none of this has anything to do with the absolute. A relaxed body-mind is no "closer" to the totality than a stressed one, just as a calm wave is no more "ocean" than a crashing one. We often ask, "How do I reach aware presence?" But who is asking? And where would this person go? If you are already that aware presence, any movement toward it is a movement away from the truth of what you are. We are not an entity that possesses consciousness; we are the conscious presence in which the entity appears. The separate self is not a thing, but a function—a relational mode of the body-mind. It is like a character in a dream who spends the whole night looking for the dreamer, never realizing that its very existence is made of the dreamer’s substance. In our daily lives, we are constantly distracted. But notice this: distraction is never of the absolute; it is only a distraction *from* the absolute. The totality is never lost. It is present in the noise of a busy street just as much as it is in the silence of a retreat. We have this idea that we must silence the world to find the truth, but why? Silence is not the opposite of noise. Silence is the background that allows noise to be heard. They exist simultaneously. To **heal meditation** is to stop fighting the noise and to recognize the silent presence that is already here, under the surface of every thought and every sound.
