The Silent Donkey: Why Stress Relief Meditation is Already What You Are
Discover why stress relief meditation isn't a goal to achieve but a natural expression of the absolute. Explore non-duality and the silence behind the noise.
We often find ourselves caught in a peculiar game, a sort of divine comedy where we spend our entire lives searching for the donkey while we are already riding it. We look for peace, for clarity, or for some grand spiritual breakthrough, failing to notice that the very "being" we are looking for is already here, carrying us through every moment. There is a common misunderstanding that we need to go somewhere or become something else to find relief from the weight of the separate self. But where could we possibly go? When we speak of stress relief meditation, we aren't talking about a ladder to climb or a process of becoming a "better" version of ourselves. That is just more horizontal movement in the dream. The body-mind might feel better after sitting in silence—the blood vessels may dilate, the immune system might find its rhythm again, and the chronic tensions we didn't even know we were carrying might begin to melt. These are beautiful, functional shifts in the physiology of the body-mind, but they are not the absolute. They are just changes in the weather of the dream. We often wonder how to handle the intrusive thoughts, the worries about the past, or the anxieties about the future that chase us even into our sleep. We try to chase them away, but fighting for peace is like fighting for a ceasefire by starting a new war; it only creates more noise. The separate self wants to manage, to control, and to "achieve" a state of calm. But who is this "I" that thinks it can manage the absolute? Who is the one trying to transcend the present? The absolute doesn't need to transcend the present because it is the very space in which the present occurs. Think of the silence that underlies noise. The noise doesn't destroy the silence, and the silence doesn't wait for the noise to stop to exist. They are not separate. In the same way, the aware presence that you are is the background for both the beautiful melody and the screeching halt. Stress relief meditation, in its most radical sense, is simply the act of noticing that the donkey is already under you. It is the realization that the tension and the relaxation are both perfect expressions of the totality. There is no one here who chooses to meditate or not to meditate. This is a hard pill for the separate self to swallow because it loves the idea of being the pilot. But if we look closely, we see that meditation happens in the life of one person and doesn't happen in the life of another, just as one tree grows tall and another stays small. It is all the dance of the totality. When we sit together in silence, we aren't "doing" something to get "somewhere." We are simply allowing the body-mind to stop its frantic horizontal running. This horizontal world is where we try to improve, to learn from our agonies, and to refine our characters. That's all well and good for the character in the dream, but the absolute freedom we are is vertical.
