The Silent Movement of Being: Beyond Mindful Movement Yoga Nidra

Explore the illusion of the separate self and the reality of aware presence. Discover why there is no path to where you already are in this non-dual reflection.

We often start these moments by simply sitting for a few minutes in silence. You can have your eyes closed or open; it doesn't matter. The invitation is to do nothing. We let that character within us—the one who is always waiting for something to happen in the next moment—step aside for a while. We just stay with whatever is happening, without any deliberate action. But who is the one trying to be silent? And what are we actually looking for? When we look closely, we find there is no one there doing the looking. There is only this: open, aware presence, already complete. In our daily lives, we are often caught in the mirage of the separate self. This construction of an "I" that is separate from the world is exhausting. It is a lie, and like all lies, it requires an enormous amount of energy to maintain. We have to filter every experience through a complex web of interpretations to keep the illusion of being a solid, independent center alive. This is why we feel so rejuvenated after deep, dreamless sleep. In that state, the separate self is suspended. There is no "I" to defend, no story to maintain, and no world to navigate. We dive into an ocean of virgin energy, an undivided totality. When we wake up, we aren't refreshed because we lay still for seven hours; we are refreshed because we briefly ceased to exist as a separate entity. We touched what we already are—that infinite sea of energy that is always here, even now, just behind our physical and mental constructions. People often talk about mindful movement yoga nidra or various meditative techniques as if they were ladders to reach a higher state. But how can we reach what we never left? If we are the ocean, why are we trying to become water? Meditation or a specific practice might make the body-mind feel better in the moment, and that is perfectly fine. It can be deeply satisfying to experience internal dimensions of luminosity and silence. Sometimes, in deep quiet, the mind becomes so clear that a thought appears like a glowing steel thread in a void. But these experiences are not "enlightenment." They are just more appearances within the conscious presence. The idea that there is a "journey" toward awakening is just another story the mind tells to keep the seeker busy. If awakening is the realization that the separate self is an illusion, then who is there to recognize what you already are? If "I" am an illusion, there can be no such thing as "my" awakening. A person claiming to be enlightened is a contradiction in terms. Liberation is simply what is happening while you are busy looking for liberation. It is the river that flows while we try to hide in a stagnant puddle of "certainty" on the bank. We are so afraid of the unknown that we try to freeze life with our thoughts, yet the thoughts themselves are part of the flow. We don't know what the next thought will be. We don't know what will happen in the next second.
