The Myth of the Seeking Self and Tapping for Stress Relief in the Absolute

Explore why the separate self seeks relief and how aware presence remains untouched by the stresses of the body-mind. You are already the totality.

One of the greatest jokes we tell ourselves is that we are going somewhere. We imagine a journey from a state of stress to a state of peace, as if peace were a distant island we must row toward with great effort. But who is the one rowing? And where is this "there" that isn't already "here"? In this noisy, aggressive world, the separate self feels under constant siege. The social masking, the overstimulation of the digital void, and the crushing weight of social anxiety create a persistent contraction in the body-mind. We feel as though we must protect something, but when we look closely, what is there to defend? We often turn to tools like tapping for stress relief because the body-mind is screaming for a moment of quiet. This is perfectly fine. There is no reason to suffer through physical tension if a simple movement can ease it. When we relax, the physiology of the body-mind changes spontaneously. Blood vessels carry more oxygen, vitalizing the parts of us that have been held in a state of chronic defense. We notice muscles that have been clenched for years—tensions we didn't even know were there because they had become our "normal" background. In the simple act of noticing, these knots begin to dissolve. The immune system, once suppressed by the heavy weight of perceived threat and the exhaustion of masking, finds a moment of respite. However, we must be honest: this stillness are not a ladder to enlightenment. Tapping for stress relief may make the "film" on the screen look more pleasant, but it does not change the nature of the screen itself. The screen—the aware presence that you already are—is never stressed. It is never anxious. It is never socialized or overstimulated. It simply allows the dance of the body-mind to occur. Whether the body-mind is tense or relaxed, the absolute remains unchanged. We tend to think that if we can just fix the body, we will finally "attain" a spiritual goal. But who is the one attaining? Is the wave trying to become the ocean? The wave is already water. It cannot become "more" water by changing its shape or calming its surface. The separate self loves the idea of progress. It loves the idea that by following a structure or a set of rules, it can eventually reach a destination where it will finally be safe. This is why we seek out spaces where nothing is asked of us—no chats, no registrations, no demands to perform. We crave a space where we can just be. But look closely: that space is not a physical location. It is not a result of a practice. It is the very nature of conscious presence. You are already that space. You are the stillness in which the noise of the world arises and falls. Using tapping for stress relief is like adjusting the chair you are sitting in; it makes the sitting more comfortable, but it doesn't change the fact that you are already home. In certain traditions, the breath is seen as a form of nourishment, a way of eating energy from the totality.
